Today, local author Dan Bomkamp hosted a presentation at the Ithaca Outdoor Amphitheater. Mr. Bomkamp is the author of The Thunderfoot series, and many other books written from a local perspective. Dan is a Muscoda native, graduating from Riverdale High School. The Ithaca 5th through 8th grade students (and the staff) braved the humidity of May in Wisconsin to enjoy the tales told by our guest.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Bomkamp for taking the time to present today. Also, thanks to Andrea Newkirk for organizing this event, Chay Schmitt and Emily Zorea for helping with student logistics, the middle school (and 5th grade) faculty for being so willing to work classroom time around this event, and to the students of Ithaca for welcoming Mr.Bomkamp to our school.

Congratulations to Ms Denise Brewer for being rewarded the Ken Solis Ithaca Teacher of the Year for 2022!!
Dr. Solis graduated from Ithaca in 1976; He graduated with a master’s degree in bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2007 and from UW Madison and is an emergency medicine physician. He also created a fitness program using jump ropes in the 1980s called “Ropics” which was designed to make rope jumping both easy to learn and to make it less likely to cause shin splints.
Beginning in 2002, Dr. Solis encouraged the Ithaca School District to recognize an outstanding teacher with this award named in his honor. But not just any teacher- one that is a leader and great at their job. Someone that goes the extra mile.
Dr. Ken Solis says, “Education is crucial for better understanding and improving our world, making life more meaningful, and improving the futures of our children. While a sound education is dependent on the community, educational board, and school administration, it is the teachers who are ultimately at the student’s side. Their commitment to teaching important facts, promoting creativity, and encouraging critical thinking should never be taken for granted. This award echoes my unspoken, but sincerely felt, thanks to my teachers as well as those who have succeeded them as the worthy recipient today.”
To say Ms. Brewer is reserved and quiet is an understatement. But she is one who believes in the good in every person she meets–young and old…er. She strives to reach every student emotionally and educationally so when they leave her after 180 days, they are better people with greater knowledge and more skills. When we talk about the foundation or backbone of Ithaca, or “back in the day”, although Ms. Brewer hasn’t been here forever, she has the character and honorable qualities of those teachers. Thank you, Ms. Brewer, for being you. Thank you for caring for our students, their families, and your school family. We greatly appreciate who you are and are thankful you are at Ithaca.

In the 20+ yrs I have worked at Ithaca, this is the largest class and you have brought the students together, seeking all voices, in the planning of their final year at Ithaca. Hats off to you! School Nurses are the leaders bridging healthcare and education. Did you know that school nursing started in New York City in 1902? The first school nurse was Miss Lina Rogers. Her first day on the job was October 1, 1902 with a mission to keep children healthy and in school. In her first month she treated 893 students, made 137 home visits, and helped 25 children who had received no previous medical attention recover and return to school. Within six months, absenteeism fell by 90 percent. By 1914 there were close to 400 nurses in the schools of New York City. Today there are over 95,000 school nurses in the United States. Stop by our district nurses office to answer trivia questions about school nursing and earn a prize.

Dear Teachers,
Thank you. Yet "Thank You" isn't enough.
You nurture and encourage our children. You find new and exciting ways for our children to learn. You smile when our children have successes, and you smile when it's hard. You quietly supply extra pencils, notebooks, hats, mittens, and snacks.
You help our children find ways to be more excited about school. You are a safe person in whom to confide. You help them discover strengths our children didn't believe they had.
You persevere. You show our children how to persevere. You hold our children to high standards and teach them that they can achieve them.
We see you. We are grateful.
Thank you, Ithaca Public School Educators.
And yet, "Thank You" is not enough.
