Word of the Day: A charlatan is a person who pretends to know or be something in order to deceive people. Some people thought he was a great leader, but others saw him as just a charlatan.
This Day in History: Jan 17, 2893–On the Hawaiian Islands, a group of American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow the Hawaiian monarch and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president. The first known settlers of the Hawaiian Islands were Polynesian voyagers who arrived sometime in the eighth century, and in the early 18th century the first American traders came to Hawaii to exploit the islands’ sandalwood, which was much valued in China at the time. In the 1830s, the sugar industry was introduced to Hawaii and by the mid-19th century had become well established. American missionaries and planters brought about great changes in Hawaiian political, cultural, economic, and religious life, and in 1840 a constitutional monarchy was established, stripping the Hawaiian monarch of much of his authority. Four years later, Sanford B. Dole was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to American parents.

This Day in History:
On January 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet and signaling the advent of the American oil industry. The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet, flowed at an initial rate of approximately 100,000 barrels a day and took nine days to cap. Following the discovery, petroleum, which until that time had been used in the U.S. primarily as a lubricant and in kerosene for lamps, would become the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes; coal-powered forms of transportation including ships and trains would also convert to the liquid fuel.
Word of the Day: Espouse, verb to support an idea, belief, or principle. Although the reviews were rather harsh, Emma had the grace to espouse the criticism and try to improve her performance.
