March 5-11, 2023 is National School Social Work Week, an opportunity for schools, communities, and partners to acknowledge and recognize the impactful work they do to support students, families, and their communities. Under the leadership of the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA), the only national organization exclusively dedicated to the profession of school social work, this celebration will emphasize School Social Work contributions of focusing on the “whole-child”, linking families to community resources, a valuable voice as part of the school’s multi-disciplinary team, and advocating for the profession of School Social Work. The theme for National School Social Work Week 2023 is “We Rise.” During the school year, School Social Workers are confronted with challenges, heightened anxieties, and anticipated difficulties. However, School Social Workers face these challenges with strength and resilience. School Social Workers rise up - supporting their students, families, and school communities. School Social Workers rise to share hope. They rise to listen and understand. They rise to challenge inequities. They rise to support all students. "School Social Workers are humble professionals,” said Rebecca Oliver, LMSW, SSWAA Executive Director, “who often are the voice for students and families but do not always voice the value they add to the school community. School Social Workers rise to support the growing need for mental health services, offering hope for students and families who face various challenges, and advocating for marginalized youth.” #WeRise2023 #SSWWeek2023

Word of the Day: Ersatz, adjective, describes a usually artificial and inferior substitute or imitation. Her snootier peers never forgave her for attending the gala in an ersatz mink coat. This Day in History: In 1834, Dred Scott, an enslaved man, had been taken to Illinois, a free state, and then Wisconsin territory, where the Missouri Compromise of 1820 prohibited slavery. Scott lived in Wisconsin with his master, Dr. John Emerson, for several years before returning to Missouri, a slave state. In 1846, after Emerson died, Scott sued his master’s widow for his freedom on the grounds that he had lived as a resident of a free state and territory. He won his suit in a lower court, but the Missouri supreme court reversed the decision. Scott appealed the decision. In the view of the nation’s highest court, under no condition did Dred Scott have the legal right to request his freedom. The Supreme Court’s verdict further inflamed the irrepressible differences in America over the issue of slavery, which in 1861 erupted with the outbreak of the American Civil War. This week our 10th-12th grade students took a field trip and attended a Career Exploration Day at the UW Richland campus. Students explored area careers to find out what different jobs are like and how they can get ready for them. They explored careers that possibly matched their personality or interests. They also discovered careers they may never even knew existed in our community. They met with over 40 local business and career info booths. If students were interested, they were able to find out about job openings this summer and Youth Apprenticeship opportunities. After the exploration time, we had the opportunity to take a tour of Rockwell Automation. Students were able to walk through the facility and gain knowledge about what happens in the walls of this manufacturing building. The tour was very informative and interesting. Shout out to Rockwell Automation and all our local businesses who made this day a huge success! We 'thank you' for making this event possible and providing a platform where our students could directly interact with the community and discover careers that sparked an interest! Enjoy the pics!

Word of the Day: A foray, noun, is an initial and often tentative attempt to do something in a new or different area of activity, as in “the novelist’s foray into nonfiction.” In martial contexts, foray means “a sudden or irregular invasion or attack for war or spoils.” The professional wrestler’s surprise foray into ballet was at first met with skepticism, but he eventually proved himself a dancer of grace and poise. This Day in History: 1955 A full nine months before Rosa Parks's famous act of civil disobedience, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin is arrested on March 2, 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery, Alabama bus. Montgomery segregation laws at the time dictated that Black passengers sit behind white passengers on public transportation, and bus drivers routinely moved Black passengers to make room for white passengers. Colvin, in refusing to move, cited that she paid her fare and staying seated was her constitutional right. She was then forcibly removed from the bus by two police officers, handcuffed and arrested, and booked in a local adult jail. She was charged with violating segregation law, disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer. (The former two charges were dropped, but the latter stayed on her record until it was expunged over six decades later in 2021.) Birthdays: Elementary: David Manning, Zayden Welsh MS/HS: none
