ITHACA SCIENTISTS ATTEND MOCK SENATE HEARING - film at 11 and the story RIGHT NOW! Ithaca's 8th Grade Scientists finished up 3rd quarter with a mock Senate hearing! Thanks to Ms. Chay Schmitt for the Press Release: 8th graders have been studying Earth's energy resources - Renewable and Nonrenewable, and the benefits and disadvantages of the different types. To finish off their unit, students were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 special interest groups (renewable, fossil fuels, or nuclear), and had to "lobby" to a "Senate", citing evidence for why their resource is the best choice and should be funded by the United States government. Although all students did a great work on their research and presentations, the Nuclear scientists won the special funding (which will really be their favorite treat from Kwik Trip). Special thanks to Mrs. Willis, Mr. Manning, and Mr. Fetterly for acting as the Senate for our students. This was a great challenge for them to rise up and meet.

On Friday, Ms. Dosher’s 1st graders were busy preparing for the impending leprechaun invasion. They read “How to Catch a Leprechaun,” shared their ideas, and built some pretty amazing traps. Unfortunately, even with all their hard work, the leprechaun still managed to escape all their traps and make the room a mess.

Ithaca would like to thank Officer Czys of the Richland County Sheriff's Department. Here are some GREAT pictures from the Ithaca' Counteract Presentation with Officer Czys and the Ithaca 5th grade class, from Tuesday March 12th. The picture of the four students shows the winners of the "best skit" representing a scenario where they demonstrated what they learned in the Counteract classes. Officer Cyz gave a presentation for the parents concerning "COUNTERACT". Mike also put on a  demonstration with his police dog, Rambo. Oh yeah, the winners ALSO received a stuffed replica of RAMBO - How cool is THAT?

WORD OF THE DAY: Hegemony: influence or control over another country, group of people, etc. The two nations have for centuries struggled for regional hegemony. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: Julius Caesar, dictator of Rome, is stabbed to death in the Roman Senate house by 60 conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus on March 15. The day later became infamous as the Ides of March. On March 15, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson addresses a joint session of Congress to urge the passage of legislation guaranteeing voting rights for all. Johnson declares that “every American citizen must have an equal right to vote.” Johnson reminds the nation that the Fifteenth Amendment, which was passed after the Civil War, gave all citizens the right to vote regardless of race or color.
