WORD OF THE DAY: To zhuzh something up is to improve its flavor or appearance by way of a small improvement, adjustment, or addition. He likes to zhuzh up his outfits with brightly-colored ties.
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On May 13, 1846, the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly votes in favor of President James K. Polk’s request to declare war on Mexico in a dispute over Texas.
Under the threat of war, the United States had refrained from annexing Texas after the latter won independence from Mexico in 1836. But in 1844, President John Tyler restarted negotiations with the Republic of Texas, culminating with a Treaty of Annexation. The treaty was defeated by a wide margin in the Senate because it would upset the slave state/free state balance between North and South and risked war with Mexico, which had broken off relations with the United States. But shortly before leaving office and with the support of President-elect Polk, Tyler managed to get the joint resolution passed on March 1, 1845. Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29.

The Ithaca High School Class of 2024 made fabulous memories on their senior field trip this week at Devil's Lake State Park. This trip was especially memorable because this class didn't have the opportunity to take an 8th grade field trip there as most 8th grade classes have and do. Students enjoyed hiking, swimming, fishing, and fun! Grillmaster Logan Anderson even fired up the coals to make lunch. Thank you to class advisors Mrs Deitelhoff and Mrs Stellner for chaperoning and helping make arrangements and Bill Kloehn for getting them safely to and from the park. A very full and fun way to spend the last days of their high school careers.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month - Here are 5 things you can do for your #mentalhealth this week: 1. Make a list of 5 things you’re grateful for today. 2. Practice positive affirmations. 3. WORD OF THE DAY: Bogart: to use or consume something without sharing. Nelson advised his friends not to bogart all the snacks before the rest of the party guests arrived.
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On May 10, 1869, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads meet in Promontory, Utah, and drive a ceremonial last spike into a rail line that connects their railroads. This made transcontinental railroad travel possible for the first time in U.S. history. No longer would western-bound travelers need to take the long and dangerous journey by wagon train.

These first graders are officially published authors! Each student wrote about what they want to be when they grow up. Each student went through the writing process: brainstorming, rough draft, editing, final draft, and then illustrating a picture. They are so proud of their work and couldn’t wait to see the finished product.
They celebrated by signing each other’s books, dressing up as what they want to be, and eating cupcakes and cookies!
