This week we observe Red Ribbon week, for drug abuse prevention. Did you know....? 47% of 9th grade students reported having had a drink of alcohol. (Ithaca 2019 Youth Behavior Risk Survey) Among students who drank, 35% had their first drink before age 13. Among students who drank, 45% had engaged in binge drinking. Persistent changes to the brain, caused by binge drinking in adolescence, can lead to behavioral struggles, problems maintaining work, acquiring an education, maintaining stable relationships, and controlling cravings or impulses for alcohol or other drugs. October 23-31 is National Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. After his death, people wanted to honor his sacrifice. Local celebrations began in California – where Camarena grew up – in 1985, and in 1988 the National Family Partnership started the first National Red Ribbon Week. This week students have opportunities to participate in activities to learn more about healthy choices, personal responsibility, and/or facts about drugs and drug use.

DON'T FORGET! Band Students and Parents: The Band Fundraiser orders will be delivered on TODAY! You will be able to pick up your orders from 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm. in the North Parking Lot. All orders have to be picked up. If you are unavailable at this time, please make arrangements to have someone else pick it up for you. There are frozen items and nowhere to store them at school.
